Union Ink Prices
11. Nylobond Bonding Agent – plastisol ink will not adhere to tightly woven nylon fabrics, e.g. used with nylon jackets. Add 10-15% Nylobond by weight to any Union Ink plastisol, and the ink will adhere to nylon.
Before printing, test the nylon for waterproofing. If you throw water on the
nylon, and it beads up, then there is waterproofing. If the water absorbs, there
is no waterproofing. If there is waterproofing, wipe the image area with
alcohol to remove the waterproofing to help the ink adhere with less Nylobond.
When adding Nylobond, measure in 10% rather than 15%, because the Nylobond will
make the ink soupy. Use as little as possible within the 10-15% range to get
the job done easily. More Nylobond also means it will dry in the screen
faster. Once Nylobond is added to ink, print without stopping until the job is
done.
Printing with Nylobond is like printing with water based inks and solvent based inks. After pulling the squeegee across the image, pick up the screen a few inches, and immediately back flood to keep the image moist before raising the screen to remove and replace the garment.
When garments are waterproofed, more Nylobond will be necessary, e.g. 15%. When
mixing by volume, add 1 part Nylobond to 4 parts ink.
Cure inks like other plastisol inks. Full adhesion of the ink will occur after
about 72 hours.
Ink mixed with Nylobond will have a pot life of
maybe 3 hours. Never put ink that has been mixed with Nylobond back in with
unmixed ink to prevent contaminating the unmixed ink. Ink containing Nylobond
is difficult to get out of screens once the ink has started to adhere to the
screen mesh. Nylobond stored for a long time will become hard and have to be
discarded. Buy only what you need.
